When I tell people, "The most important thing you can do right now is to build your list," they ask me, "What do I build a list about? Where do I start building this list?" That's pretty simple, actually.
Number one is pick a topic. This is as simple as taking a hobby, an interest, something that you like or enjoy. You can then think about and work on whether or not you make money on it from the start. Play to your hobby or interest when you’re first getting started.
Don't make the mistake of trying to build a list on something like "Internet Marketing," in general because that's where people are making money. Your competition will be HUGE! Think about it, who your competitors are--Mark Joyner, Alex Mandossian, Joshua Shafran, Armand Morin, and on and on and on. Plus, if you're just starting out, how can you teach people about something you're only beginning to learn?
Or, you may think personal development is a big topic to build a list around, or health and fitness, or whatever. The point is that unless you're really passionate about something, you won't succeed. Your list will know you don't know what you're talking about and then... no trust.
Start with something you're familiar with, something you're involved in and understand. Maybe it's cats or knitting. Or, what if you're into history or cross-country skiing? Whatever it is that interests you, that you'll really work hard at promoting is the topic you should choose for your niche.
And think about it: You'll immediately understand your audience. You'll know what they want, and you'll be able to speak their language.
For instance, if I asked you what you knew right now abou

t integration marketing, you'd probably say nothing, or you may know about it, I don't know. But I'm talking about the average person who comes online and is just starting out in a business of their own. Integration marketing isn't something that people just pull out of a hat. They have to study the marketing game and learn about marketing before they can talk about it.
But, if you know cats, for example, you'll know how they behave. You'll know the dangers, like don't leave string or rubber bands around because cats are fascinated by them and may eat them, which could lead to all sorts of trouble. Only somebody who knows cats well can say that, probably. So, you'll be comfortable with the people that are interested in what you have to offer.
Understanding your list is very important. You have to speak to them in terms they'll relate to and you'll have to get to their hearts and minds so that they trust you and will follow your recommendations. This makes them responsive.
While we're on cats, let's say that you recommend a certain type of cat food to your list. They already know you have cats because you've told them about your cats and probably how strongly you feel about them. Your list knows you'd only provide the best for them. So, when you tell them that your cats are thriving on this certain kind of food, do you think many list members will buy some to try it? Of course!
The bottom line is, always go toward what you know about when choosing a subject to build a list around. Without doing that, you'll just be spinning your wheels. Choose a niche that you can dominate and then, build your list. It will be worth your weight in gold.
